WIAW – Cold Foods Edition

As I’m sure you’re aware, it’s been HOT. Pittsburgh has been hovering around the 90 degree mark, but I know it’s worse in other parts of the country.

Honestly, I’d rather be hot and sweaty than cold any day of the week. Thinking back to February in Pittsburgh makes July and August seem heavenly.

Onto What I Ate Wednesday – I realized ALL of my foods today were cold or chilled.
Peas and Crayons

How do I benefit from my mother’s obsession with double dark chocolate gelato (other than stealing a spoonful every once in a while)?

Perfect overnight oats container.

This mix was 1/3 cup oats, 1.5 Tbsp almond butter, 1/3 cup water, 2/3 cup almond milk, scoop of designer whey, 1 tsp chia seeds, a few drops of stevia, and lots of cinnamon.

Mid morning snack? A 2×2 bite of cake from the breakroom. Yes, I’m an office lady. But this cake was PERFECT. The cake itself was incredibly soft and moist, the icing was serious business. You know, thick, gritty, super sugar saturated buttercream. I can’t take that thin, oily, shiny type of icing. The true test? A quick swipe of the finger over the corner of the cake box (it would just be wasted after all) to ensure it was good icing and not bad icing. Yes, the oily kind is usually prettier to look at, but this good, thick icing seems to be hard to come by these days and I couldn’t resist a bite.

Is it icing or frosting? Frosting on cupcakes and icing on cakes? What’s on cookies? Icing?

I digresss.

Just to balance out the bite of cake (and all of the over analysis that went along with it), I had a sliced orange. Originally this was going to be my after lunch snack but my oatmeal only kept my tummy quiet until about 10:15 am today. Maybe I need to revisit my breakfasts with staying power post.

image

Lunch followed around 12:30 – Mexican inspired – tuna mixed with black bean and corn salsa, over green leaf lettuce and about 1/4 of an avocado. Much better combination that I had expected!

image

3pm-ish snack: left over fruit salad from my friend’s bridal shower (recap still to come!).

image

Hot yoga was at 6:45 pm this evening, so I knew I’d need some protein and carbs to hold me over. Light & Fit vanilla and 1/4 cup of my newly purchased granola. Delicious! I also munched on some pasta salad and handful of peanuts before I left.

image

Post yoga (and post shower – it was a super sweaty class) smoothie: my current watermelon protein smoothie obsession, with a few cashews instead of chia seeds. The raw nuts really add a salty, savory flavor.

image

image

The perfect end to my eats for the day? A square of dark chocolate from my favorite chocolate shop. Yes, even this was in the fridge – you can’t take any chances with good chocolate in the summer time!

image

Which icing do you prefer? Thin and smooth or thick and gritty? When is it icing and when is it frosting?

What kind of dietitian am I? ;)

Happy Wednesday!

I only like thick buttercream too! I really don’t like the oily icing or the whippy kind. Sometimes whippy is okay if it’s frozen, but really, just a good buttercream is where it’s at for me. :)

I really like packaged chocolate frosting…and homemade cream cheese frosting – yum!

I’ve actually never thought about whether it should be icing or frosting haha. Now you’ve got me wondering :). I like mine thick and smooth!

Love that oats container… more than that, I love that gelato. :)

I always add a sprinkle of salt to my smoothies – it brings out the fruit’s sweetness!

i had never thought about the frosting/icing thing! but of course once you said it i HAD to know. so i googled it ha :) i guess they can mean the same thing but usually frosting is creamier and thicker?

Just going to go ahead and say that although I have not eaten overnight oats in almost a year (or oatmeal for that matter), the idea of eating it in the gelato container makes me VERY happy.

I think frosting is thicker…Lol I have no clue. That’s how I’ve always thought of it. Icing is more like a glaze i think

Hmm I think I mostly call it frosting.

And for my wedding cake, I was adament due to buttercream and not fondant..it still looked gorgeous and tasted LOADS better..mmm

Good idea with the cashews in a smoothie — I’m going to do that on Friday!

You sound like a fun dietician to me. ;) I think it was your duty to test out the frosting to make sure it was safe for others to consume. You have my mind on frosting now….and overnight oats in a jar. I’ve never made either before.

Thin and glossy is icing, thick, whipped and sugary is frosting! I like the latter more!

Frosting on cupcakes and cakes…iciing on cookies.

I love cream cheese frosting on sugar cookies and carrot cake (the only cake I really love). I have even made it healthier by using the 1/3 the fat cream cheese, you can’t even tell! But sometimes, you gotta have the ‘real’ stuff too ;)

hehe i’m the same way! I taste test the icing to see if its worth sinking my teeth into.. and if the cake isnt good it gets trashed after the first bite. I love calories, but not ones that don’t taste good =)haha!

Happy WIAW!!!! <3 stay cool lady!

Smoothies are the BEST after hot yoga! Have you ever tried Bikram yoga?

My favorite icing is simple: ALL ICING! :D

If I’m going to indulge in icing, buttercream is the only way to go! I cannot stand the light, fluffy, whipped cream – like stuff. Bleh!
