Successes and Failures

Thank you to those who left me encouraging messages after my moody blog post.  Honestly, I need to learn some new stress management techniques – not being able to run or take spin class should not make me so negative.  I apologize, but I wasn’t looking for “permission” to write whatever I want in my blog – that was always my intention – I’m just asking not to feel pressured to take perfect photos or share my absolutely boring breakfast every day.  Deal?  Deal.

So on to the past two days’ high & lowlights.

Success: Julie’s rutabaga fries.  And the rutabaga was only $1.69 at my very overpriced supermarket.  This was my first rutabaga experience ever and I must admit I was happy with the flavor!  The smell was kind of cauliflower-y but the taste was delish.  They were a bit soggy but starting to burn… I might bake longer at a lower temperature next time.

Failure: Making my pizza pizza-shaped.  I love TJ’s herbed pizza dough and didn’t let it rest long enough before trying to shape it… I ended up with a very abstract (yet still delicious) artichoke and red pepper pizza.  Canned pasta sauce is such a time saver for meals like these!

image

Failure: Eating all of my hummus within 7 days of opening.  I can’t finish hummus or soy/almond/coconut milk within the recommended timeline.  I just can’t do it.  I even brought it to work and this was all I could accomplish (I’m already on day 10, hopefully I live).  Maybe I should buy less demanding food.  But roasted red pepper hummus is sooooo good on my carrots…

Success/Failure: Getting the free Artisana samples was definitely a success, but the massive oil separation in the almond butter jar was not easy to deal with at work with my crappy plastic fork.  Honestly I wasn’t thrilled with the flavor either… I’ll probably stick to my store-ground almond butter.

By the way, I haven’t learned from my food hangover.  My Easter candy and baked goods are not only still accessible but also out in plain view – everything they aren’t supposed to be when trying to decrease your food cues.  So I’m trying to enjoy them in moderation.  I can’t be giving up sugar all the time!

It’s been really warm in the ‘burg the past few days, so I’ve been enjoying more smoothies.  When I drink them along with coffee or water or a piece of fruit on the side, they really have staying power.  They will be a great way to get back on track!

PS – Where is Presley?  I really liked her blog and WP says she is gone today.  Tear.

My question(s) to you:

– Do YOU finish your hummus/almond milk/etc within the recommended time period?

– What’s your favorite brand of almond/nut butter?

so important to comprise a list of successes and failures, for obvious reasons in the self, but also to remind OTHERS that we share failures in life, not just success. we all fail., don’t we?
i used to waste hummus, but then the idea came upon me that i could put it on sandwiches in place of any condiment! mmmm! burgers with hummus!!
in my opinion, trader joe’s has the best almond/peanut butters. they are really inexpensive and have superior flavor to other brands. also, crunchy-raw almond butter is the cat’s meow.
    peace,
    liz

We usually finish our hummus in 2 days but soy/almond/coconut milk is another story! We go in spurts. I can finish it if smoothies are on the menu for breakfast otherwise it takes about 2 weeks.

Ah I’m so jealous of your rutabaga fries! I can’t find that veggie anywhere 😥 And weird shaped or not I’d still eat that pizza for sure.
My favorite nut butter brand thus far is PB&C cinnamon raisin swirl, mmm soooo good. And I hate the oil separation too, it’s such a mess and I end up getting pb everywhere. What I do now that helps a bit is to invert the jar and put it in the fridge so that the pb mixes in with the oil 🙂

I want to try rutabaga fries so badly! I got Artisana nut butters, too – I really like the pecan butter. Have you tried that one yet? It’s got a thick, slightly crunchy texture. That’s why I like it so much 🙂

i rarely finish things before their expiration dates, and i believe that this is fine. hmm, my favorite kind of almond butter has to be the trader joe’s brand. i go back and forth between peanut and almond.

I never finish perishable products within the time frame! Ugh haha. I like your attitude today 🙂 Rutabaga fries sound LEGIT!

I’m alive! haha I had to switch gears and focus on some short term goals before I could really focus on having a blog 😦 I miss it already…

That’s one of the reasons I’m back and forth about it… I feel like I don’t care enough as I should, but enough to want to share interesting things. I’m just going to be posting less often. Good luck with your wedding planning and everything else! Keep in touch via e-mail 🙂

I rarely finish things in the allotted time too, especially hummus! I don’t even think I knew it only lasted 7-10 days…oops. I usually just go by the date, lol. Yayy for some nice weather in the Burgh!

  9. Shanna, like Banana April 28, 2011 at 3:26 pm

Definitely can never finish my almond/soy milk within the designated date. Hummus usually I can 😉

  10. Alyssa April 28, 2011 at 4:23 pm

aaargh, I can NEVER finish my hummus on time! that, or my leftovers. it’s always too late by the time I remember them. oops.

Naturally More is my favorite pb for sure.

Im a bacteriologist so i always finish everything within the recommended time period. Seen to many scary things to push the limits. The only thing I push are yogurts bc they already have bacteria so how can they go bad?

  12. Katie April 28, 2011 at 5:15 pm

haha! I guess I am well rounded! Actually was not reading Jane Austin, its the background the kindle just had on at the time!

I love hummus and I go through it too fast, so it never has time to expire!!!!

    xoxo ❤

I totally feel your pain! I usually eat the hummus in time, but I’m awful with almond milk. I wish they had individual servings of it, that would be great!

  14. beyondbananas April 28, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Almond Milk.. I always finish on time! I use it daily in my oats, coffee..and in some desserts or smoothies when I make them.
Hummus is a totally different story. it usually doesn’t happen. It is something I LOVE, but don’t enjoy regularly enough.
Sometimes, I feel like more of a failure..when I finish a jar of NUT butter in like.. 2 days. Seriously? 14 servings? 2 days.. hmm! For example, in a weeks time, I’ve demolished a jar of PB.. and I am 3/4 of the way through sunflower seed butter.

    I need better self control

    • Claire @ Live & Love to Eat April 28, 2011 at 7:14 pm

I use both dairy and nondairy milk (depending on what I need it for), so I can’t finish the nondairy ones in time!

As for your nut butter addiction, there are WAY worse things to overindulge in. I’ve yet to try sunflower seed butter but it sounds yummy!

  15. Hungry Dancer April 28, 2011 at 9:23 pm

I am the same way!! I can never finish my almond milk in time!! 7 days?? NO WAY!!

  16. Paige is Running Around Normal April 28, 2011 at 11:39 pm

I hardly ever finish my almond milk in the recommended time! Hummus either. Nut butter? Always 🙂

  17. Jenn @ Peas & Crayons April 29, 2011 at 12:29 pm

I totally fail at the pizza shaped pizzas and the eating the hummus before expiring too! Hehe whoops!?

  18. hungryhealthyhappy April 29, 2011 at 5:16 pm

I read somewhere that almond milk is ok past the 10 day limit . . . I’m with you in the camp of “if it smells/looks/tastes ok, it’s probably fine!”

Be gentle with yourself–it’s easy to get down on yourself even more when you feel like you’ve failed in some way (ie, not working out or whatever). Focus on those successes. I’ll bet there are a lot more out there than you realize. 🙂

Late on the bandwagon here. 😉 If you’re in the Pittsburgh area, Wholey’s makes great almond butter, as does the Market District up on Settler’s Ridge (on 376 toward the airport). They both come pre-mixed and have great flavor and texture. Just thinking about it makes me hungry! 🙂
